New book

A personal letter from the number zero

A student can read every word of a poem correctly and still miss its meaning. Mathematics is no different. Students can remember vocabulary, follow procedures, and even arrive at correct answers without seeing the relationships that make the mathematics make sense. PerceptualLearning™ helps teachers look beyond what students can reproduce and investigate what they actually understand.

About the book

Numbers have feelings too

Mr. White is a math teacher who loves bringing numbers to life. When one of his students calls zero “nothing,” he sees a chance to show how important zero really is.

“Don’t refer to Zero that way! It would hurt Zero’s feelings if he were listening,” Mr. White explains. The next morning, a mysterious letter from Zero appears on the student’s desk.

In it, Zero shares the many ways it matters in math and in everyday life, and the student learns that zero is not just a number. It’s a hero.

Written by Don White with Carcille C. Burchette. Illustrated by Maggie Kitzmiller.
